The Notebook
Nick Cassavetes (2004)
Summary
The Notebook starts out by showing an elderly man reading a story to an elderly woman who has Alzheimer’s, in a nursing home. The story is about a girl named Allie Hamilton and a boy named Noah Calhoun. Allie comes from a very wealthy, high social class family who was in Seabrook Island, SC for the summer. On the other hand, Noah is in a much lower social class, carefree, and a local in Seabrook Island. Allie and Noah meet at a town carnival and their friends contributed to the start of the relationship. They spend the entire summer together and before Allie has to leave, Noah takes her to an abandoned house called The Windsor Plantation. Noah tells her that he wants to buy the house and they begin to dream of remodeling it together. They plan to spend the night at the house but Noah’s friend comes to tell them that Allie’s parents have sent the police out looking for her. When she returns home, she is banned from seeing Noah again because her parents do not approve of his social class. Allie and Noah have an argument that night and end the relationship. Allie then finds out that her and her family are going home the next morning and her family sends her to college in New York. Noah was struggling with the separation from Allie and writes her a letter every single day. Allie never gets these letters because her mother keeps them from her. Noah enlisted to fight in the war and Allie becomes a nurse for wounded soldiers. Meanwhile, she meets a very wealthy man, who her parents approve of. They get engaged, but Allie is still thinking of Noah. When he returns home from the war, he buys The Windsor Plantation and begins to renovate it, in hopes of Allie returning to him. Allie sees Noah’s picture in the newspaper and immediately goes to see him. They spend time together and she questioned why he never wrote to her. She finds out her mother kept all of the letters and then, Allie and Noah kiss. Allie’s fiancée finds out about the reunion and questions what she wants. At this moment, we find out that the elderly women is Allie and the elderly man reading to her is Noah. In the nursing home, Noah asks Allie if she remembers whom she chose and she says she went back to Noah’s doorstep and she choses him. Allie asked Noah to read this story to her in the nursing home and said, “I will come back to you”. Allie soon forgets. He goes into Allie’s room the next night and she remembers again. The next morning, Allie and Noah are found and have died peacefully in each other’s arms.
Analysis
Love has always been known as an unstoppable force. The Notebook started as a novel written by Nicholas Sparks and later turned into a “have to see” romance movie. Receiving love from a significant other is something that everyone desires to have at some point in their live. The Notebook channels that desire and tells a story of two people falling deeply in love. In this movie, it is shown that love can bring two people together and create an unbreakable bond, despite what other people think and their own differences. In the movie, Allie is in a higher social class than Noah and that is why her parents don’t approve and band her from seeing him. “It was an improbable romance. He was a country boy. She was from the city. She had the world at her feet, while he didn’t have two dimes to rub together.” (Words the elderly man reads to the elderly woman in the nursing home) Once you love someone, that love will never go away. It might not be as strong and apparent, but it is still there. When Allie leaves for New York, Noah writes her 365 letters, one letter everyday for a year. She never got these letters because her mother kept them from her but Noah’s love was still strong for Allie during that time. If the love between two people is genuine and meant to be, then fate will take over and nothing will be able to stop it. “The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that’s what you’ve given me.” (From a letter that Noah wrote Allie) Allie says, “Do you think our love, can take us away together?” and Noah responded, “I think our love can do anything we want it to.” Love is the most powerful emotion, it can control the decisions we make, and how we live our lives. As we grow up, love can bring us pleasure and heartbreak. However, when you find the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with, you will be overwhelmed with jubilation and excitement for what is to come.
